Six years on from their second straight Europa League defeat to them, West Ham have had the last laugh in their unlikely rivalry with Romanian minnows Astra Giurgiu

West Ham fans have finally got one over on their bogey team Astra Giurgiu – better known as Astra Goo Goo.

The Hammers were agonisingly knocked out of the Europa League in two consecutive seasons by the Romanian minnows, losing 4-3 on aggregate in the 2015/16 third qualifying round and then 2-1 over two legs in the play-off round the following campaign.

Astra’s fortunes have drastically changed in recent years, though. Since winning the league title and making the Europa League round of 32, they’ve been relegated twice amid financial turmoil with owner Ioan Niculae sentenced to five years in prison for money laundering in 2021.

Now in the third tier, things haven’t got any better for them this season. They sit bottom of the table with 0 goals scored and 48 conceded after five games following a 19-0 defeat to league leaders Arsenal Tunari at the weekend.

The West Ham fanbase rejoiced upon learning of that result, with one tweeting: “Tears in my eyes, so long astra goo goo.” Another simply wrote: “Justice.”
